Fred Eaglesmith Fred Eaglesmith plus: The Fabulous Ginn Sisters, Guthrie Kennard Saturday, January 28, 2012 doors at 7:00 PM
Fredheads dig his tales of tried-but-true blue-collar guys, tired cowboys, young boys in love, bare-knuckled farmers, heartbreakingly good women, beautifully bad women, lonesome good guys, bravura bad guys and Friday-night criminals.

Johnny Winter Johnny Winter plus: Jim Suhler, Damon Fowler Wednesday February 1, 2012 doors 7
Texas guitar legend Johnny Winter became a seeming overnight star in 1968 with the release of his first album on Columbia records. Winter was and remains an incendiary guitar player and a gruff, authoritative vocalist. An exceptionally fluid and dynamic soloist on both standard and slide guitar, his records in the 70's tended towards rock excess, but by the end of that decade he had returned to a much more pure blues approach which continues today. Along the way Winter was instrumental in helping the career resurgence of Muddy Waters, producing and playing on a number of acclaimed records. Winter was an important influence on a whole generation of musicians, including Chris Whitley and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Eleven Hundred Springs Eleven Hundred Springs plus: Sons of Fathers, The Possum Posse Friday, February 3, 2012 Doors at 7pm
The members of Eleven Hundred Springs can't find an easy way to describe their music, so they've taken to labeling themselves instead. But long-haired, tattooed hippie freaks; doesn't accurately convey the Dallas-based quintet's appearance, much less its finely whittled sounds. Forced to try again, they resort to spouting this equation: Buck Owens x Doug Sahm x Rolling Stones x Willie Nelson. Here's what it really is: original Texas country music in the Americana vein played with respect for esteemed elders but without falling into a time warp. It really has nothing to do with sounding like any particular act or style. The bandmates just do what sounds good to them. And they've learned it sounds pretty darned good to others as well.

Brandon Rhyder Brandon Rhyder plus: The King Bucks, J Charles & the Trainrobbers Friday, February 10, 2012 doors at 7:00 PM
A back-roads boy from Carthage in Northeast Texas, Rhyder says his roots “are painted in country tones.” Not Texas country, not Nashville country, not old or new country. Just … country. The kind of place where songs still say something, where emotions are meant to be bared, where a man onstage alone with his guitar can captivate a crowd, one smile or teardrop at a time.

The Long Surrender, the new studio album from the southern Ohio-based husband-and-wife team of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Karin Bergquist, otherwise known as Over the Rhine, is something rare and wondrous — an intimate epic. Shot through with the joys and sorrows of modern-day existence and the unchanging fundaments of the human condition, the album has the feel of a living thing, senses alert, feet planted firmly on terra firma. The album title “speaks to our ongoing desire to let go of certain expectations (and much of what we are so convinced we know for sure) in favor of remaining open and curious,” Karin explains.

“I am not a present to be opened up and parceled out again,” our man insists on “Gardenia,” track seven on his new album. Ha! That’s what you think, pal. From the day nigh two decades ago when the first scratchy sounds of Pavement floated in the ether above Stockton (crown jewel of California’s Central Valley, the sprawling breadbasket that neither the North or the South have claimed in California’s ongoing “two states” culture war; just providing some historical context that will be useful a few sentences later), the music of Stephen Malkmus has been the gift that keeps on keepin’ on.
Did SM not offer the eternal promise of “perfect sound forever”? Was this sly appropriation of a digital age boast for Pavement’s low-bandwidth treble-kicks not a prescient example of that “irony” thing everybody talked about in the ‘90s? Can we then conclude that that by invoking “paralyzed dreams forever” on this album Malkmus foretells some sort of bad moon on the rise?

Girls Girls plus: Unknown Mortal Orchestra Friday, March 9, 2012 Doors at 7:00 PM
It’s rare to find something as true and beautiful as the band Girls. Listening to their music, it’s as though Christopher Owens and JR White were meant to find each other, sincere rock and roll soul mates in the age of irony. And while that might sound like fancy, it’s closer to the truth than you think.
“If you’re going to San Francisco…”
Just as the Velvets crackled with New York City electricity and Smiths’ songs came soaked in Manchester drizzle, so the music of Girls captures the stoned and sun-brushed outlook of life in San Francisco. Taking the classic California pop template perfected by Brian Wilson and applying a woozy, narcotic makeover, Girls make music that sincerely glorifies adolescence - a youth of hopeful confusion and love strong enough to hurt you. You’ll detect 50’s surf-pop, 60’s psychedelia and 80’s shoe-gaze at play here – the West Coast-by-way-of-somewhere-else; but ultimately San Francisco washes over this music.
