Asylum Street Spankers Asylum Street Spankers plus: Porterdavis, The O's Friday, July 3, 2009 8:00 PM, Doors at 7:00 PM
The magnificently indefinable Asylum Street Spankers began in 1994 at a booze and hallucinogen-fueled party at the Dabbs Hotel in Llano, Texas. There Christina Marrs and Guy Forsyth met Wammo. During a night spent singing and playing along the banks of the Llano River they made a pact to keep the all-night-sing-along-anything-goes spirit of that party alive. Upon returning to Austin they gathered a few like-minded pals and began playing free shows at clubs and busking on the Guadalupe Street Drag. (Guadalupe was known as Asylum Street because it led to the state, um, hospital. A Spanker is someone who can play their instrument vigorously and proficiently.)

Electric Touch Electric Touch plus: The Burning Hotels, Hoyotoho, Ishi Thursday, July 9 2009 Doors at 7:00 PM
Stick an Englishman in a band with three true blue Texans and you're bound to come up with something pretty damn original. Electric Touch's mind-blowing self-titled debut album (due out this summer from the Houston-based Justice Records), is a tour de force of brilliant melodies, rock hard riffs and stick-in-your-head lyrics. Electric Touch is off to an impressive start. They wowed crowds at SXSW and are already booked to appear at the Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and ACL festivals.

The members of Eleven Hundred Springs can't find an easy way to describe their music, so they've taken to labeling themselves instead. But long-haired, tattooed hippie freaks; doesn't accurately convey the Dallas-based quintet's appearance, much less its finely whittled sounds. Forced to try again, they resort to spouting this equation: Buck Owens x Doug Sahm x Rolling Stones x Willie Nelson. Here's what it really is: original Texas country music in the Americana vein played with respect for esteemed elders but without falling into a time warp. It really has nothing to do with sounding like any particular act or style. The bandmates just do what sounds good to them. And they've learned it sounds pretty darned good to others as well.

Jim Jeffries Jim Jeffries plus: Dave Little Satuday, July 11, 2009 8:30 PM, Doors at 7:30 PM
Jim succeeds with jokes that most comedians wouldn’t touch with an ability to both charm and offend the crowd in equal measure.
In 2005 Jim wowed audiences at The Montreal ’Just for Laughs’ Festival where he performed in the highly acclaimed ’Nasty Show’ and garnered one of the biggest press articles at the festival and was asked to return back in 2007 with his solo show ‘THE SECOND COMING’ which sold out EVERY night and had ticket touts selling his tickets at 3 times face value.

Dredg
Hailing from Los Gatos, CA, Dredg began sharpening their aggro-metal sound in the early '90s. Comprised of Gavin Hayes (vocals/guitar), Mark Engles (guitar), Drew Roulette (bass), and Dino Campanella (drums), the group was performing in area clubs before they'd even graduated from high school. Dredg self-released the Orph EP in 1997. The ambitious Leitmotif followed two years late, and it was reissued with the band's 2001 signing to Interscope. El Cielo, Dredg's proper Interscope debut, arrived in autumn 2002, and Deftones producer Terry Date was at the helm for their 2005 effort Catch Without Arms. They released the concert album Live at the Fillmore a year later.

Scott H. Biram Scott H. Biram plus: Grady, RTB2 Friday, July 17th 2009 doors at 7 PM // show at 8 PM
Rock ‘n’ Roll ain’t pretty and neither is Scott H. Biram. The self proclaimed ‘Dirty Old One Man Band’ successfully, and sometimes violently, lashes together blues, hillbilly and country precariously to raucous punk and godless metal.
Biram ain’t no candy-ass singer/songwriter either, sweetly strumming songs about girls with big eyes and dusty highways. HELL NO!!! His singing, yodeling, growling, leering and brash preachin’ and hollerin’ is accompanied by sloppy riffs and licks from his 1959 Gibson guitar and pounding backbeat brought forth by his amplified left foot. The remainder of this one-man band consists of an unwieldy combination of beat-up amplifiers and old microphones strung together by a tangled mess of guitar cables.

Supersuckers Supersuckers plus: Speedealer, The American Fuse Wednesday, July 22nd 8:00 PM, doors at 7:00
Supersuckers
Our story is almost impossible to believe. This band is literally a human cartoon. We all grew up among the dead-ends and cactus needles of Tucson, Arizona and have known each other since grade school. We graduated from the same high school together at the same time (a school immortalized in our song “Santa Rita High) and we chose to play in a band together because we liked to hang out together, not because we were great musicians or anything. I truly believe that a band is defined by their limitations, that what they can’t (or won’t) do is just as important as what they can do. I guess that, in this era of pre-fabricated, put-together-to-have-a-hit bands, we’re kind of an aberration and I gotta tell ya that that makes us smile a little every day.

Tommy Alverson Tommy Alverson plus: Chuck Mead, Ryan Beaver Thursday, July 23, 2009 8:00 PM, Doors at 7:00 PM
Even though Tommy Alverson’s new album is called Country to the Bone, he would like y’all to know he’s been to Nashville, country music’s supposed nerve center, exactly once.
“I came home and kissed the ground and I’ve never been back,” he confesses, adding, “I don’t think I’m missing anything.
Even the slogan on his Web site reads, “Texas music the way it ought to be.” The album was released at Alverson’s 10th annual Texas Music Family Gathering, a steadily growing three-day festival that’s about as Texan as it gets.

CKY
What happens when four exceedingly different and distinct personalities come together to create heated, inspired music? Well, as CKY have shown over their ten plus years as a rock and roll force, it can lead to intelligent, provoking riffs and lyrics, meticulously detailed production combined with magical multi-textured melodies and heady drumming.

VNV Nation VNV Nation plus: War Tapes, Ayria Monday, July 27, 2009 8:00p.m., Doors at 7:00p.m.
VNV Nation´s inspiration was originally the clash of modern and classical Europe cultures, where mythology and technology live in an uneasy fusion but this has since broadened to encompass a world view. The music ranges from electronic dance music to ballads and classical inspired music. Inspirations are taken from a wide range of styles including contemporary underground club culture, industrial and classical music. The lyrics draw on philosophy, literature, art, politics and different forms of symbolism. VNV Nation does not advocate any ideology. It is a metaphor for expression.

Alpha Rev Alpha Rev plus: Sounds Under Radio, Stars Go Dim, Bronze Whaler Saturday, August 1st, 2009 Doors at 7:00 PM
Alpha Rev is a journey into the depths of the human experience. Frontman Casey McPherson's "supremely gifted songwriting" and rock inspired vocals mix with the classical instrumentation of a cello and an emotionally gripping violin, creating a multi-layered sound that "simply explode[s] with unrestrainable power." (Soundcheck Magazine's SXSW coverage).
Their sound is reminiscent of such groundbreakers like Led Zeppelin, the Stones, and Radiohead. Their orchestral rock compilations have a sound that separates it from "a zillion competitors," as McPherson's own painful background helped form a band that produces music with a searing yet inspiring depth.
